In an interview to Palak Shah, he says if his leader contests from UP, BJP would make huge gains. Excerpts:

What do you feel now that the CBI has given you a clean chit in the Ishrat Jahan case?

I feel that it is the end of debate (charcha). Nothing else. These things don't affect me. I'm always at peace.

How well will BJP do in Uttar Pradesh, where you have been busy?

The environment is good. The BJP will emerge as the largest party.

How many seats?

Until the candidates are declared, we cannot say anything. If somebody gives any estimate before candidates' list, their prediction would be wrong. But the mood is in favour of BJP. There is a wave in favour of Modi. UP wants change. But I do not want to get into this prediction game before candidates are declared.

Will your UP list have radical changes?

There is some difference every time. I cannot give you details just to make headlines for your newspaper.

When will your list be out?

We have not decided yet. The BJP parliamentary board will decide. It is difficult to give a date.

Will Narendra Modi contest from UP?

That is yet to be decided. Modiji will definitely fight the Lok Sabha elections. But the place is yet to be decided.

Would he contest from Gujarat and UP?

How can we say before it is decided by the party?

By when will it be decided?

Even that is not decided.

Won't it be of help if Modi decides to contest from Uttar Pradesh?

Yes, I can say for sure that if he contests from UP, BJP will make good gains in the state. But I would still like to add that it is yet to be decided as to where Modiji would contest from.

What is your Uttar Pradesh strategy?

The anti-incumbency against SP and Congress is so strong that there is no need to make a strategy exposing them. People have not forgotten the corruption of BSP and deterioration of law and order after SP came to power. It has turned the entire state against the SP government. In my entire career, I have not seen any political party in our country lose its popularity as fast as SP did after coming to power. SP has raced towards unpopularity and people have pinned hopes on BJP now. 
The difference in Narendra Modi's leadership will be seen in all areas. It has generated anti incumbency for other political parties in the country. We can show that the leadership of Modiji is not based on loose talk but proven administrative efficiency. He has given a concrete leadership to Gujarat in 12 years.

This time, the caste arithmetic favours BJP. The entire Backward Castes are attracted towards us. All parties except BJP in UP have demanded minority reservation based on religion, which has angered OBCs. So they have pinned their hope on BJP.

Where does BJP stand on minority reservation?

BJP has vocally opposed it. It is unconstitutional. There is no provision for minority reservation based on religion in the Constitution. Also, given the 50% cap on all reservations and given that Scheduled Castes and Tribes have constitutionally guaranteed reservations within this, another form of reservation linked to religion will have to happen at the cost of OBCs. We will not support policies that lessen or take away the rights of OBCs.

But then isn't economic backwardness among Muslims a reality?

If Muslims get reservation on the basis of their caste we have no objection, but we will object and oppose if they get reservation on the basis of their religion. There are some castes among Muslims that fall in the OBC category. We have no objection to reservations for them.  Those who are Backward among Muslims and other religions can already avail of reservation benefits. We do not oppose any reservation to them.

But why promote this idea of reservation based on religion? BJP is against the idea of reservation based on religion. We do not want to divide the country based on religion. But whoever falls under the definition of OBC and other such categories has a right to reservation constitutionally irrespective of religion.

"Modi-led government might be the best option for a pro-growth government," Mr Godrej said.

Mr Chidambaram, on Wednesday, called BJP's economic policies retrograde and "blood-eyed". He also took a personal dig at Mr Modi and asked why the Gujarat Chief Minister had never fielded a Muslim candidate.

Far away from the Swiss Alps, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley in Delhi on Thursday sprung to his party and Mr Modi's defence by citing a report from Moody's that backed the Gujarat Chief Minister's investment friendly policies.

Mr Jaitley said, "Coincidentally, on the day that he (Chidambaram) chose to speak about the BJP and Narendra Modi at Davos, Moody's has come out with its India report which is highlighted in the media. Its reporting indicates that the industry is today waiting for a political change led by Narendra Modi for a major turn-around to take place".

"He (Chidambaram) was expected to market the Indian economy when the political and trade leaders of various countries' meet. Instead, he has chosen to speak on BJP and Modi," Mr Jaitley said.

Moody's Analytics, a division of global ratings agency Moody's in its India Outlook report however also said that Mr Modi faces challenges in attracting non Hindu-votes and may have difficulty forming a minority government with smaller parties.

"...although his good record as chief minister of Gujarat suggests he can overcome these obstacles. If elected, a Modi-led BJP government should offer a more business-friendly policy that will further support confidence and investment," the report said.

Mr Godrej's India Inc colleague Ajit Gulabchand, chairman and managing director of infra major HCC, also spoke in support of Mr Modi on Friday at Davos.

"Believe Modi is for jobs creation and investments...Modi talks about a market economy," he said.

A rejoinder to the Anti Modi article in Economist Newspaper

Dr Mrs Hilda Raja| Chennai | Dec 25, 2013:: The Indian Express of Dec 20th carried an article from the Economist on page(9) on Modi.-titled Narendra Modi –“A man of some of the people-A populist with a nasty past and a decent economic record wants to run India”. (Link given ).

I think the author used his colored spectacles and wrote that article. It was not only biased but very crude.The analysis was meant only to show Modi in a bad light.What is the ‘nasty past’ of Modi? Going through the article which is so prejudicial even I was unable to detect the ‘nasty past’ of Modi Let me assure the author that Modi is not a man of some people but a man of most of the people.

The author must be a sycophant from the court of the ‘prince’ and that explains why even the comparisons are so skewed. The caption that ‘despite receiving little schooling and not being of a high caste Mode rose…..This under the file picture on the same page says it all. So the author has exposed his bias.The very fact he has mentioned of schooling and caste bringing in the social yard sticks by which he has measured Modi. We have had great politicians who had hardly passed the 5th standard and yet they made good politicians. On the other hand we have an economist of a PM who has sent the country down the drain. We have Mrs Sonia Gandhi with not much schooling and still managed to reign as Empress of India and dictate to the economist PM-who through her NAC runs the country. How is Modi less schooled than Mrs Sonia Gandhi? Talking about caste what caste does Sonia and Rahul Gandhi belong to?

The author has demeaned himself by even commenting “At rallies Mr Modi, who looks like a barrel -chested cross between Father Christmas and a professional wrestler” What if one has to say that the Prime Minister looks like a fox and functions as a robot. Does it read well? Rahul Gandhi looks like he is lost in wonderland and needs to read Alice in Wonderland .I am just putting this to show how irrelevant these are to the main issue. Yes, Narendra Modi is the Prime ministerial candidate and that has sent the jitters down the spine of the Congress and its sycophants .The author does not see how the country has suffered from the Congress’ actions and inactions. How the people have become servile and pushed to a corner. How after 57 years of its ruling the country the nation is more backward than it was formerly. How starvation and pauperized the people are. How the corruption has shaken the very fabric of the government. Right from the top down to the bottom it is a corrupt government that we have.

Now comes the relevance of Modi-a strong no nonsense leader with strong leadership qualities is what the nation needs. How can any nation become strong when it is steeped in corruption? It is not as though corruption is in small areas.It is not only massive but wide spread. Every single neta is corrupt. But one cannot point a finger on this score against Modi. For example, Modi takes a salary of Rs 12553 and manages with three personal staff. While the average salary of a CM is 5 lakhs and a personal staff up to 22 people.

When it comes to Mrs Sonia Gandhi)In her last affidavit she had mentioned that she has an ancestral house in Italy –as the only immovable asset .She also mentioned that she borrowed money from her daughter. In the recent affidavit her net worth has been calculated to 2 billion, making her richer than Queen Elizabeth, the Sultan of Omar, the Prince of Monaco and the Sheikh of Kuwait(IE Dec3rd )This goes to prove the quantum of corruption and the mother head of it all. Everyone knows how Mrs Sonia Gandhi came to India and with what. What were her assets and what was her qualification. How has she acquired such wealth? Does she not owe the people of India an explanation? If Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has amassed such wealth what about others? Will she be able to accuse others? Will she be able to stem corruption? Can a dirty Hand clean the nation’s financial sheet? What if Modi has amassed even a fraction of the assets which today is attributed to Mrs Sonia Gandhi? How will the political parties and the media react?

We have a PM who abets corruption. There is complete paralysis of the government both at policy level and at the governance level. There is a dual power centre-I am sorry- there is only one power centre and that is an extra constitutional one that revolves round Mrs Sonia Gandhi-and the PM is just a puppet. It is from this background and this ‘inner circle’ that Rahul Gandhi comes out and is projected as the Prime Ministerial candidate.

He who never fails to talk of change must change first the very ascendancy of himself. Must start right at the top and not just talk of change. This is the backdrop in which Modi has to be seen and it must be understood that the people have got fed up of the Congress. The writing on the wall is clear.May be persons like the author and other sycophants are on denial mood that there is no anti-Congress wave. There is not only an anti Congress wave but also a pro Modi wave.And we have a powerful lobby trying to arrest his rise.This lobby certainly does not stand to gain and is not pro national. It wants the same old netas and the corrupt Congress to continue with of course some cosmetic changes.

The country has lost its vitality and is considered as a soft nation. The media is biased against Modi and hence harps on his ‘nasty past’ What is the nasty past may I ask? If the Congress which had imposed Emergency on this nation can continue, if the Congress party which had organized and engineered an  Sikh pogrom in the after math of Mrs Gandhi’s assassination is being absolved why should the Gujarat riots of 2002 be held against Modi? It makes no difference  if Amarya Sen thinks so…he is a sycophant of the Gandhis and his reasoning  has no logic because he says that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul were not in the government while the Sikh pogrom took place in 1984 while Modi was the CM during the Gujarat riots. For one thing how does it absolve Mrs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul when the Congress party is the same and those who incited the people and led them to the Sikh shanties were all rewarded with ministerial berths, and when Rajiv Gandhi justified the pogrom. The same line -the same dynasty is ruling and wants to continue.This butchering of thousands of Sikhs is absolved but Modi is not-there is a difference between riots and pogrom.In the Gujarat riots Hindus were also killed.They may be fewer but this is not the first communal riot in Gujarat or in India and there has been riots in other parts of the country.Riots have been almost a feature of this nation because of the policies followed by the Congress and other political parties.So to hold the Gujarat riots as Modi’s ‘nasty past’ is absolutely off sync. And  Rahul Gandhi goes on reminding the people what his father did and what his grandmother did and what his great grand father did etc..The legacy baggage also contain the tens of  thousands of Sikh lives that were brutally butchered-the destruction of the houses,rape of Sikh girls arson and plunder.Legacy baggage cannot be sorted out at the discretion of Amartya Sen,and the Gandhis and the Congress party.

Modi has not divided the nation-Modi is not communal. It is the biased perception of the Congress and all other political parties-For example are the RJD, BSP, SP not communal? Yet has the Congress not allied with these? All the political parties thrive on communalizing the people on the basis of caste, region and religion. And to top it all the Congress’ appeasement policy is communal in its very inception, its operation and its goal. Why put the odium on Modi and call him communal and divisive?

It is a fact that Rahul Gandhi is not fit to lead the nation. He has a long way to go and must prove himself. Everything was given unto him. He did not earn anything through hard work. So one can only laugh when he talks of change. How did he become the Vice President of the Congress party? A democracy is not based on birth-a dynasty is a negation of democracy and reveals that we do not have true democracy. Simply because other netas  follow the same pattern does not make democracy vibrant. It seems that the politicians all want to follow the dynasty route-this because it is the easy route to mint money, no accountability and no work load, no prescribed norms, easy life. A look at the assets of all our netas will reveal this-the enormous assets for the past five years-their life style   substantiates this. And to cap all this there is no basic qualification called for!

To get back to the MODI –a man of some of the people…”the author has labored to show how his achievements are not flawless. For this he quotes Amartya Sen who says that the infant mortality rate of Gujarat is more then three times than of Kerala and the life expectancy ten years lower. I wonder why Amartya Sen picked up Kerala and did not compare these two indices with those of his own State West Bengal –or Orissa, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. One can juggle with statistics as Justice Sachar did in his famous survey.-this to suit one’s own hypothesis.

Coming to the recent scandal the author of the Economist has again played to the gallery:-regarding the accusation that Modi used intelligent officers to spy on a woman with whom ‘Modi was apparently besotted” is ample prove of the author’s prejudice and anti Modism. The article is not worth being published in the Indian Express. Finally I want to assert that there are writers who want the Congress dynasty to continue because it brings them gains. It is the vested interested of the media which assails Modi-especially the English media. The electronic media is no better. I wish and fervently hope that the media both print and electronic will play its unbiased positive role as the fourth estate and uphold itself as a pillar of true democracy and democratic values. Santosh Tiwari | Financial Express | Dec 12, 2013:: Columbia University professor Arvind Panagariya has been one of the strongest votaries of the Gujarat model of development. In an interview with Santosh Tiwari, Panagariya explains the significance of the outcome of the assembly polls in four states—Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. He says the primary job of the new government at the Centre would be to formulate a roadmap for boosting investment.

Do you think populist programmes have failed to deliver electorally in view of the results in the recent assembly polls?

Going by the results, especially in Rajasthan where these programmes were tried with great intensity, yes.

But in Chhattisgarh, they seem to have worked for the BJP?

In Chhattisgarh, Raman Singh also provided good governance and his main populist programme, food security, had been in place for some time. So, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh are not exactly comparable.

So, basically, you mean to say that it has to be populist policies-plus-governance to win an election?

The last-moment gimmicks are not going to help. People are looking for long-term solutions. This is where sustained rapid growth, which is one of the likely outcomes of good governance, becomes important also. The voters now want something concrete and not just promises and last minute goodies.

That way, number of chief ministers have been voted to power a third time in the recent past?

Yes, chief ministers such as Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar and Naveen Patnaik who have provided good governance and sustained growth have been repeatedly returned to power.

But in Delhi, Sheila Dikshit has not been successful and has been drubbed, particularly by the AAP. What was behind this?

There are several pieces to this puzzle. Delhi is where the Anna Hazare movement flourished. So, there was a large contingent of young voters who were rallying against the Congress but also against the BJP. These voters were very organised and committed to the cause. They ran a highly effective campaign from door-to-door. Perhaps the performance of Sheila Dikshit administration in the last term did not help her either. The allegations emerging out of the CWG scandal hurt her image. Finally, the effective campaign run by Narendra Modi also meant.

Exit poll shows that 'Hindu nationalist BJP' gaining Four States as an effect of Modi Boost.

India Opposition Seen Winning Four State Elections in Modi Boost

Bloomberg | Andrew MacAskill & Bibhudatta Pradhan | Dec 4, 2013:: India’s main opposition party is set to take control of two states from the Congress party and keep control in two others, boosting its campaign to end the ruling party’s 10-year hold on power in national voting next year, exit polls showed.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, which picked Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate in September, will win elections in states that account for almost a sixth of India’s population, including two currently held by the ruling Congress party, according to an exit poll conducted by C-Voter and broadcast on the Times Now television channel. Vote counting and official results will occur on Dec. 8.

The elections, held in recent weeks, are the final test for India’s two major national parties before elections that must be held by May 2014. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Congress party has seen corruption scandals, elevated consumer inflation and the weakest economic growth in a decade erode its popularity.

BJP victories in the four states may boost Indian stocks, according to Deven Choksey, managing director of Mumbai-based K.R. Choksey Shares & Securities Pvt. The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex, which has climbed 6.6 percent this year, fell 0.7 percent in Mumbai today.

“These results are good news for the stock market,” Choksey said. “The turnout in Delhi means a big victory margin for the BJP. A victory in Delhi will be the trump card for the BJP in the 2014 national elections.”

In a setback for Congress, the exit poll shows the Hindu nationalist BJP gaining its highest seat tally since 1993 in New Delhi while falling short of a majority. The BJP will have 29 of the capital’s 70 seats, with the incumbent Congress taking 21. The Aam Aadmi Party, which campaigned against corruption while contesting its first election, is poised to win 16 seats to hold the balance of power, the poll showed.

The BJP will also wrest control of Rajasthan from Congress by winning 130 out of 200 seats, up from its current total of 78, according to the poll.

While Modi’s party will retain power in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Congress is poised to gain seats from its current tallies, the poll showed. In Mizoram, a small state in India’s northeast ruled by Congress that also held elections, no exit polls were conducted.

No margin of error or details of the poll methodology were given.

All the state elections had record voter turnout, the Hindustan Times reported, without saying where it got the information.

Modi, chief minister of Gujarat state in western India, is projecting his record of governance and stronger-than-average economic growth in the state he has ruled since 2001 in an attempt to propel his party to national power. Congress has been deploying Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi, the party’s president, both members of a political dynasty that has ruled the country for more than half of the 66 years since independence.

The price of onions, a key ingredient in Indian cooking, has climbed 278 percent in the last year. Higher food prices eat into consumers’ disposable incomes and disproportionately impact the poor who make up about two thirds of India’s population.

India’s final full session of parliament before the general election begins tomorrow. The government has listed 38 bills for passage including one that would give a third of the seats in parliament to women. In the family borough in the northern heartland, which has been loyal to India's most powerful dynasty from the days of first Prime Minister Jawaharal Nehru, voters want electricity, hospitals and roads, more than the cheap food on offer. Such a change of heart threatens to upend the Congress party's central calculation to win next year's election: that poor rural voters who make up the backbone of support will stay loyal because of the big welfare programmes it promotes, including a flagship $21 billion food subsidy scheme. Instead, even in such a bastion of Congress support as Rai Bareli district, opposition leader Narendra Modi's message of growth and investment is gaining ground, despite critics' misgivings about his hardline Hindu nationalist roots and a perceived bias against the nation's minority Muslims.

"We don't need subsidised food ... It's a donation and we don't want that charity," said Arjun Rewal, a farmer in the Rai Bareli hamlet of Shivgarh in the centre of India's most populous state of Uttar Pradesh. "We need hospitals with doctors, we need roads, we need electricity supply and we need someone who can tackle inflation," the 52-year-old said, emphasising his point with a stab of his earth-brown finger. Rewal and the farmers with him, who meet one evening a week in the grounds of an old palace, see Modi as the person who can deliver. "In this area, for the first time, people are talking about another political leader and that is Narendra Modi," he said. Modi has promised quick reforms and an end to a prolonged period of policy paralysis, pointing to the double-digit pace of expansion in the western state of Gujarat that he has governed for three terms.

Uttar Pradesh sends 80 members of parliament to New Delhi, more than any other state. In the last election in 2009, Congress won 21 seats and Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 10. According to a recent opinion poll by AC Nielsen for the Economic Times, the BJP could win 27 seats in Uttar Pradesh in the next election, due by May, with Congress winning just 12. Rahul Gandi, Nehru's great grandson, looks likely to lead the Congress into the election, but he was generally seen as lacklustre at state election rallies in Uttar Pradesh in 2012.

Congress using wrong data to target Modi: BJP

TNN | NEW DELHI | 29 NOV 2013:: BJP on Thursday attacked the Centre for making "baseless allegations" against the Gujarat government, saying it was using wrong data to defame CM Narendra Modi. 

Sibal had described Gujarat as the most indebted state. 

"Sibal has failed to convince even himself with these figures. He did a lot of data mining but came up with wrong data. He is levelling baseless charges against Gujarat and its chief minister," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said. 

The law minister had sought to puncture Modi's development claims, saying his Gujarat model was not backed by facts. Sibal released a 32-page document carrying statistics about the state's performance on various paradigms and alleged that Gujarat was the "most indebted state of India".

Javadekar suggested that Sibal should do his "homework" well before levelling such charges.

Shri Modi addressed rallies in Sikar (Sikar district), Khinvsar (Nagaur district), Ajmer (Ajmer district) and Bhilwara. The NDA’s PM candidate made a strong appeal to the people of Rajasthan to vote in large numbers on 1st December 2013 and make the BJP victorious. He attacked the lack of development in Rajasthan under the present Congress Government and assured the people that Rajasthan will scale new heights under the leadership of Smt. Vasundhara Raje.

Speaking in Ajmer, Shri Modi said that wherever he has gone to campaign, he has seen a BJP wave. He stated that had the Congress followed the path of development for the last 60 years, things would be very different today. Accusing the Congress of dividing people, Shri Modi avowed that the Congress fears that if divisions in society case to exist and if the country becomes one then the Congress’ existence would be under threat. He urged UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi to speak about inflation, due to which common people are suffering.

PTI | New Delhi |  28 Nov 2013:: Congress today sought to puncture BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi's development claims saying his Gujarat model was not backed by facts and he was "neither zero nor hero".

Releasing a 32-page document carrying statistics about Gujarat's performance on various paradigms, Union minister Kapil Sibal said Narendra Modi's state is "most indebted state of India".

"He (Narendra Modi) is neither zero, nor hero. His place lies somewhere in between. He is trying to put down everyone else, the rest of India and give credit only to himself for everything as if he is messiah," he told reporters.

"The fact is that there are many states including Delhi, which are way head Gujarat in many parameters. He changes history, he changes statistics. The truth about Gujarat is that as there is good and bad, hits and misses about it like it is about every state," he said.

As campaign for Delhi assembly polls enters its last leg, Sibal, who is an MP from Chandni Chowk parliamentary seat here, projected the Sheila Dikshit-ruled state way ahead of Narendra Modi's Gujarat.
