India only nation without a war memorial, says Narendra Modi

NDTV | Mumbai | Edited by Nadim Asrar | 27 January 2014:: Narendra Modi used a moment of nostalgia to score a political point today, when he attacked the ruling Congress for failing to construct a war memorial for martyred soldiers.

"I feel some good things have been left for me to do," the BJP's prime ministerial candidate said after observing that India was the only country without a war memorial to "honour their sacrifice." The BJP is upbeat about its prospects in the general elections due by May after several surveys have predicted a good showing by the party.

The crowd roared slogans like, "Modi lao desh bachao (bring Modi, save the nation)."

Mr Modi was in Mumbai to felicitate legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar on the 51st anniversary of her song 'Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon' sung as a tribute to India's soldiers who died in the 1961 war with China.

Mr Modi also observed that the first time Ms Mangeshkar sang the song, composed by C Ramchandra and written by Kavi Pradeep, was on January 27, 1963, with the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru present. "Lata didi has reconnected us to the past. We are fortunate that Nehru first heard it and now we have," Mr Modi said. (Highlights of Narendra Modi's speech)

The audience at the Mahalaxmi Race Course was predominantly made up of armed forces personnel and Mr Modi's speech was addressed to them and to the massive constituency of soldiers across the country. Apart from promising them the memorial, the BJP leader also referred to the emotive issue of the beheading of an Indian soldier by Pakistani troops last year, cyber attacks by China and the alleged lack of funding for acquisition of weaponry.

The 63-year-old leader said India has the potential to be a military powerhouse. "If India decides, and has the right leadership and policies, within 10 years we will be in a position to export arms," Mr Modi said.

Standing beside Ms Mangeshkar, who is known for her fondness for the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Modi even broke into the song and sang with others present.

In her speech, Ms Mangeshkar, denied that the event had a political colour and said, "I thank the organisers that I got an opportunity to meet Narendra bhai."

Ms Mangeshkar was also a special guest in November last year at the inauguration of a hospital in Pune in memory of the singer's father.

"Everyone in India wants to see Narendra Modi as prime minister," Ms Mangeskhar had said at the Pune event, generating a political controversy.

Dear Friends,

Today, we celebrate our 65th Republic Day. 64 years ago, on this very day; we formally became a Republic and adopted our Constitution. Today is a day of national strength and self confidence.

Republic Day fills each and every one of us with strong emotions. It brings to mind powerful images of India’s military, parading to the world its full might and grandeur. It makes us salute once again the selfless patriotism of our women and men in uniform. It inspires us with the moving accounts of the bravery and gallantry award winners.

Today is also a day to look back and cherish our glorious past! Remember the sacrifices of the great women and men of the freedom struggle. Remember the members of the Constituent Assembly, who gave us in our Constitution a rooting force we can be very proud of. Today we renew our faith and commitment in this sacred text that has made India what it is. We pay our tributes to the venerable Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, whose anchoring role can never be forgotten.

Importantly, today is also a day for introspection. What does the Republic of India stand for? What does it mean to us? What direction has it been headed in over the last seven decades? And what does it need to do in the coming years?

One phrase that has been gaining significant traction of-late is the ‘Idea of India’. Public and academic discourse around this has been hijacked by a select few, becoming a powerful tool in furthering their hegemony over the same. Many have asked me in lengthy op-eds, on social media and so on that “Modi ji everything else is alright but what is your Idea of India”? Others have not been so kind, preferring to debate my party’s very suitability with this ‘Idea of India’ itself.

However, one must understand that no single person or entity can appropriate the ‘Idea of India’. BJP’s National Council Meet last week gave me the opportunity to share some glimpses into what my ‘Idea of India’ was as well.

First and foremost, my understanding of the ‘Idea of India’ fundamentally rejects such a hegemonic conceptualization of an ‘Idea of India’. The Rig Veda teaches us: ‘आ नो भद्राः क्रतवो यन्तु विश्वतः’. That is ‘let noble thoughts flow from all sides’! This is not just a mantra, but a central tenet of our Constitution as well. Ours is a path of tolerance. Of the celebration of diversity. Where every Indian not just envisions, but works towards building the India of his or her dreams. My ‘Idea of India’ calls not just for tolerance, but a celebration of all points of view. Where the sensibilities of every individual are respected.

Truth, Peace and Non-violence form the central tenets of the ‘Idea of India’!Our scriptures teach ‘सत्यमेव जयते’, that Truth alone triumphs. I am committed to such an India where the wheels of justice move quickly and equally for every Indian irrespective of his class, caste or creed. Let us have faith in our nation and our people. Let us walk the path shown by our great leaders, as a fitting tribute to their selfless sacrifice. Let us devote ourselves to the cause of nation building with the mantra of ‘India First’! Let us together build a nation that once again redefines the story of mankind!

Modi most preferred choice for PM: ABP-Nielsen opinion poll

BJP-led NDA to win 226 seats, Congress-led UPA facing major rout may get only 101 seats: ABP-Nielsen survey

Niticentral Staff | 25 january 2014 :: Four months ahead of Lok Sabha poll, ABP news-Nielsen Opinion poll predicts a massive gain for BJP-led NDA and a disastrous rout for the Congress-led UPA.

The survey says that NDA, of which Narendra Modi is the Prime Ministerial candidate, would get 226 seats (BJP alone would get 210 seats) while the Congress-led UPA would end up with mere 101 seats in the Lok Sabha election, which is due to be held by the mid of the year. Left parties would get 30 while 186 seats would go to others.

NDA’s vote share in 2014 is predicted to be 31 per cent, UPA would poll 23 per cent while 41 per cent vote share would go in favour of others.

As far as popularity graph of the key contestants for the top post is concerned, the survey says that 53 per cent people want to see Narendra Modi as the next Prime Minister of India. Mere 15 per cent endorse Congress vice president Rahul Gandh and 5 per cent people back AAP convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

NDA is heading for victory in majority of Lok Sabha segments in the States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand while the party is also predicted to win a substantial number of seats in the South India, says opinion poll conducted by ABP News – Nielsen.

In 151 constituencies of North India, the NDA would win 82 seats, UPA 25 while 44 seats would go to others, if the election is held today, the Opinion poll says. Read more here>>>

A confidential report of Central Intelligence Agency narrates that the Cyclone may prove it as a fatal consequences for Congress and UPA (United Progressive Alliance) which may be arrested under 100.

While various poll surveys give unquestionable victory for BJP and NDA (National Democratic Alliance), some congress agents in different media houses suppress the shameful defeat of Congress and they are making a sense that BJP will not get the majority to run the next Govt. under the Prime Minister-ship of Narendra Bhai Modi.

NDTV | Updated On: January 24, 2014: A day after Finance Minister P Chidambaram hit out at BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi at the World Economic Forum in Davos, prominent India Inc leader and Godrej chairman Adi Godrej lent a voice of support to Mr Modi in the Swiss Alps. "Modi-led government might be the best option for a pro-growth government," Mr Godrej said.

Mr Chidambaram, on Wednesday, called BJP's economic policies retrograde and "blood-eyed". He also took a personal dig at Mr Modi and asked why the Gujarat Chief Minister had never fielded a Muslim candidate.

Far away from the Swiss Alps, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley in Delhi on Thursday sprung to his party and Mr Modi's defence by citing a report from Moody's that backed the Gujarat Chief Minister's investment friendly policies.

Mr Jaitley said, "Coincidentally, on the day that he (Chidambaram) chose to speak about the BJP and Narendra Modi at Davos, Moody's has come out with its India report which is highlighted in the media. Its reporting indicates that the industry is today waiting for a political change led by Narendra Modi for a major turn-around to take place".

"He (Chidambaram) was expected to market the Indian economy when the political and trade leaders of various countries' meet. Instead, he has chosen to speak on BJP and Modi," Mr Jaitley said.

Moody's Analytics, a division of global ratings agency Moody's in its India Outlook report however also said that Mr Modi faces challenges in attracting non Hindu-votes and may have difficulty forming a minority government with smaller parties.

"...although his good record as chief minister of Gujarat suggests he can overcome these obstacles. If elected, a Modi-led BJP government should offer a more business-friendly policy that will further support confidence and investment," the report said.

Mr Godrej's India Inc colleague Ajit Gulabchand, chairman and managing director of infra major HCC, also spoke in support of Mr Modi on Friday at Davos.

"Believe Modi is for jobs creation and investments...Modi talks about a market economy," he said.
